Persephone and Styx came to us from a high kill shelter, wary of humans but finding comfort in each other. This bonded duo stuck together, but kept their space from people, often chooses hiding spots or places high up to observe people safely from above. Any kind of attempt at getting close or bonding was met with resistance, and they would retreat to a safe distance. While their fearfulness of humans was heartbreaking, we would not give up on showing them the love they so deserved. Enrichment items provide a great way for humans and animals to bond slowly and safely, with no added pressure of getting too close if they aren't ready. We provided them stimulating enrichment with puzzles, wand toy time, catnip toys, and eventually, after finding them motivated by food and their guards starting to come down, target training! Styx opened up a bit quicker, and to more people, while Persephone remained a bit stubborn. With regular target training sessions utilizing a target stick, she upgraded to hand target training! She was not only allowing someone to get close to her, but was learning that choosing to touch a human would result in one of her favorite things; FOOD! This smart kitty started to open up, and while still guarded with strangers, was allowing those close to her to not only pet her, but was rolling over and showing signs of affection! After 519 days at the shelter, they finally found their forever home. While they might take a bit longer than others to get settled and open up to their new human, we know they eventually will, as they were showing us they DID actually enjoy interacting with people, they just needed some patience and to build trust.
Enrichment is such a great form of stimulation, bonding, and can provide comfort, care, and build trust while an animal is with us at the rescue. Continue to help us change the lives of animals like Persephone and Styx!

Bubbles was a 10 year old cat who came to us in September of 2024 with GI Lymphoma. Her condition was manageable with a special diet and some medication, but the vet told us she only had about 18-24 months left. While she was with us, she spent most of her days with a staff member in their office, either lying on a chair in the sun or on their lap seeking warmth. She had her good days and her bad days and was noticeably starting to lose vision while she was with us. We also had to accept the reality that she might not find a home in time, so each day we gave her love, we offered her comfort, we gave her that sunny chair she loved, and we told her goodbye before we went home, in case that was the last time she saw us. After 85 days of treating it like it might be her last, she found a home just before Christmas that was willing to support her and show her unconditional love. So, we said goodbye to her one last time, but this time it was a happy goodbye.
Bubbles has since passed, after being spoiled in her forever home for 6 months before she was ready to say goodbye. Help us give animals like Bubbles the specialized diet and care they need while with us!

Mila left our rescue with a wagging tail and a smile, and we thought we would only hear happy updates from her new family. We were shocked when the Humane Society of Portage County, Wisconsin contacted us to say they had Mila. She was found tied up to a pole with toys, a blanket, and some food. A quick scan of her microchip led them to believe she would be reunited with her owner. Unfortunately, that wasn’t what happened, and we realized she needed us to take her back to the safety of Town and Country Animal Rescue.
The Humane Society of Portage County, Wisconsin took amazing care of her and even helped her get back to us. A big-hearted animal lover, Brett Jarman, from the Wisconsin shelter, flew Mila to Atlantic, Iowa, where one of our amazing volunteers was able to drive to pick her up. Talk about some unbelievable logistical teamwork from animal lovers just like you! It was an incredible journey to get a deserving dog back to us.
Help us provide animals like Mila with important necessities upon intake like vaccinations, deworming, and microchipping!

Fluffer Nutter came to our rescue as a young stray, roaming the streets on his own, looking to mate. After taking him in, getting him neutered and vaccinated, his friendly and playful kitten like personality started to show, stealing the hearts of those who met him!
Female cats can get pregnant as early as four months old and can have an average of two to three litters of kittens per year, with their litters ranging from one to twelve kittens. An unneutered male cat can father upwards of 20 litters every year! Unspayed females and unneutered male cats can contribute to hundreds, even thousands of kittens that are born homeless, like Flutter Nutter. His story is a reminder of why spaying and neutering is so important. It reduces the number of cats who end up on the streets or in overcrowded shelters and even lowers the risk of certain cancers and infections. By choosing to sterilize pets, we can spare countless animals from the hardships Fluffer Nutter faced and help more cats find the loving homes they deserve.
Help us continue to fight against animal homelessness and over crowdedness in shelters!

Pumpkin was just a young pup when she was found freezing out in the cold in Arma City, Kansas. Her parents nowhere in site. Her siblings next to her, but unfortunately no longer alive due to the extreme temperatures. Pumpkin, being the fighter she is, was determined to stay alive despite all odds. This meant scavenging and reverting to extreme measures for food and resources.
After hearing her heartbreaking story, we brought her into the rescue. We provided Pumpkin with warmth, shelter, water, meals, and lots of love, something she hadn't experienced in who knows how long.
Help us continue to provide animals like Pumpkin with a safe place, full bellies, and everything they need for a fresh start!

Before arriving at Town and Country, Jimmy lived in a heartbreaking hoarding situation and suffered a severe, untreated femur injury, leaving him in constant pain. Broken teeth made eating difficult, and when he arrived, he was frail, frightened, and broken. Jimmy was welcomed into a loving foster home, received a dental procedure so he could eat comfortably, and underwent a life-changing orthopedic surgery to repair his leg. For the first time in a long time, he has hope of walking without pain. He’s found his forever family and is living proof of the incredible difference compassion and generosity can make.
Help us continue to provide animals like Jimmy with lifesaving medical procedures!
